Abstract
This article is an overview of my research as a visiting researcher of the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures of Georgetown University and as a visitor at the National Archives and Records Administration(NARA,the National ArchivesⅡ) in Maryland during my sabbatical from April 1st in 2014 to March 30th in 2015. My research focused on the Japan -U.S.relations and the Japanese social matters in the early 20th century mainly based on diplomatic archives of the United States. Originally this article was written as a script of my presentation at Georgetown University. Before I was given a qualification as a visiting researcher of the university, I was told by my sponsoring professor Kevin Doak that I would have to deliver a presentation during my stay. However, the opportunity of my presentation was not provided in that period. And so this article is published on a basis of my idea that I would like it to be read as a report of my research during my stay as a visiting researcher of Georgetown University. Above all, I hope that this article will be read by my relatives who have been evacuees of Iitate village in Fukushima prefecture since March 11, 2011 due to the nuclear plant disaster and have not been allowed to return home.
