Description

Mean F0 in spoken utterances is an important acoustic-phonetic attribute that influences listeners. The present study investigated how small changes in mean utterance f0 (19 conditions) influence perception (utterance pitch, speed, and naturalness), age estimation, and listeners’ mood. Result indicated that higher mean utterance f0 leads to higher perceived utterance pitch and speed, extreme mean utterance f0 decreases utterance naturalness and positive mood, and age estimation based on mean utterance f0 changes depending on the speaker's gender. Results of the present study has made it possible to guess how utterance f0 affects perception, age estimation, and mood.
