One of the most pressing challenges for the international community is the nuclear situation in North Korea. China is considered to have the greatest influence over North Korea, so the world expects China to be able to persuade North Korea to abandon its dangerous designs to become a nuclear power. Kim Jong-un, the leader of North Korea, visited China four times alone between March 2018 and January 2019 thus showing North Korea’s dependence on China. Nevertheless, North Korea has ignored China’s demands and dares not relinquish its nuclear policy. To understand Sino-Korean relations, it is necessary to study their long history. This dissertation is one such attempt. Although it ends in the latter half of the seventh century, this paper identifies some important and distinct points. The tributary system 〈冊封体制〉 played a great role. Especially when either China or Korea lost integrity and plural states fought for hegemony, in order to maintain legitimacy, both needed to keep ties with their counterpart. I think this dissertation provides ample examples of this. Both China and Korea have experienced rather long and divisive times. Even now, China has the Taiwan problem, Korea also has the conflict between north and south. Therefore we can consult history. Besides, in order to better understand relations between a big power and a small power, such an exercise provides useful viewpoints.
