Description
The purpose of this study was twofold. First, to investigate the location and characteristics of the natural disaster monument in Kazo City, Saitama Prefecture that tells of the damage caused by Typhoon Kathleen. Second, to determine the actual use of the monument by residents. The results revealed the following points. (1) There are several natural disaster monuments in Kazo City, erected along the riverside where the disaster occurred and near shrines and community centers, which conveys the damage caused by Typhoon Kathleen. (2) The natural disaster monument telling of the damage caused by Typhoon Kathleen in Kazo City was deteriorating, making it difficult to read the text on the monument, making it necessary to use nearby information boards to obtain information about the disaster. (3) Voluntary disaster management meetings are being held around the affected area to discuss river breaches, and their comments on river ruptures were categorized into "dissemination of rupture information" and "identification of rupture locations." (4) The natural disaster monument in Kazo City that conveys the damage caused by Typhoon Kathleen identified the breakage location, which makes the monument useful for increasing residents' awareness of disaster preparedness.
