Description
The name chu was applied to the various officials during the period of the Nan-pei-chao (南北朝), but it was maiIily used to denote the commanders of the army like chun-chu, (軍主) tui-chu (隊主) and shu-chu (戍主). These were the surnames added to the officials and not the regular official names. During this period the soldiers were raised by the personal authority of a general and were thrown into the national army without solving this personal vessalage. In this article an attempt was made to illustrate such various names of the commanders of the army under the Nan-pei-chao.
