It is said that the emperor was versed in all Chinese learning, especially in the study of the Zen (Ch'an (禪)) sect. The emperor, who called himself Yuanming chu-shih (圓明居士), stated that Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism are single unity and that the essence of these, Hsing (性) Hsin (心), Chung (中) and I (一), were the same thnough the meditation of the Zen sect. The author thinks that such religious awakening of the emperor was the back-ground for his political ideology.
