Liu Tsai (1160-1239) was a man who, just past the midpoint of the Southern Sung period, after holding several provincial offices, resigned and spent the remainder of his life at his home in the Chin-t'an district 金壇 of Chenchiang 鎭江. In this essay I first regard the Ching k'ou chih chiu ch'uan 「京口耆舊傳」 until now a work of unknown authorship, as Liu Tsai's work, and then, using the man t'ang wen chi 「漫塘文集」, collection of his writings, I have tried to make a chronology of his life. l also have examined his activities at his home after his retirement through the categories of his exchanges with bureaucrats and literati, thought and social activities, and have depicted him as a gentry figure of what may be called the Southern Sung type. In particular, his private welfare activities directed on three occasions towards more than 10, 000 starving people should be noted. Finally I have presented some of my own ideas concerning the reasons why his typically gentry-like activities were not taken up by a larger social group.
