The upperstream of the Huang-sui river lies on the northeast of the Lake Kokonor. During the T'ang dynasty this was a militarily important area, and several military outposts were established. The only source containing comparatively detailed information on the area has been the Yu-shu hsien-chih kao 玉樹縣志稿. This, however, reportedly consists only of quotations from. the Huang-yuan hsien-chih 湟源縣志, the search of which has been carried on for some time, but thus far in vain. Recently, I managed to acquire a book titled Tan-ke-erh t'ing-chih 丹噶爾廳志, which I believe served as the original text for the Huang-yuan hsien-chih.By examinig the text and attached maps, I could come up with a clearer understanding of the area before Huang-yuan county was established, including the location of T'ang military outposts. In addition, Fu-szu ch'eng 伏俟城, the last capital of T'u-yu-hun 吐谷渾, is said to have located 15 li 里west of the Lake Kokonor. The expedition led by Huang Sheng-chang 黄盛瑋 and Fang Yung 方永 found ruins on the southern shore of the Cayijiɣoul river, a tributary of the Buqaɣoul river, and determined them as the site of Fu-szu ch'eng. Some scholars, however, raised doubts since then ; subsequently, the question remains unresolved. In my opinion the doubts come largely from misreading the related sources, and the site found by Huang and Fang is certainly that of Fu-szu ch'eng.
