Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine several questions about the power structure of the Taewongun 大院君 political power (1863.12-1873.11) in Korea. The author carried out a research into the Yangban 兩班 bureaucracy who had held important offices in the central government in the period of his political power, and analyzed that they had belonged to which of the Sasaek Tangp'a (Four Sects) and they had come under the rule of which clan. The important offices into which the author carried out a research are the Uijong 議政, the P'anso 判書, the Ch'amp'an 參判, the Kyujang-gak 奎章閣, and so on. As a result of the analysis, the author made the following three points clean. 1) The Namin 南人 and the Pugin 北人 out of the Sasaek Tangp'a were little appointed to the important offices from the end of the Namin political power (1694) to the start of the Taewongun political power. But, in the period of his power, they were frequently appointed to almost all important offices. 2) Out of those who hold offices as the Uijong, the P'anso, the total number of the Chonju-Yi Clan 全州李氏 belonged to each sects surpassed the number of the Andong-Kim Clan 安東金氏 from the Noron 老論. 3) The number of the military offices appointed to the P'anso had remarkably increased.
