The performance of an automatic urine analyzer "Aution-analyzer" for automation and mechanization of urinalysis in medical examination was studied. Results of protein, occult blood and pH tests of the instrument were compared to those obtained on the same urine specimens by using "Hema-combistix Reagent strips." Results of protein and occult blood tests were also compared to protein concentration measured by biuret method and number of red blood cells in the urine sediment (expressed as RBC/mm3), respectively. The urine specimens were collected from 85 students who gave positive protein and or occult blood tests on the previous two consequtive urinalyses. Of 299 comparisons between results for protein obtained with the Aution-analyzer and Hema-combistix, 96% agreed as to whether the test was positive or negative (Table 1). The relationship of the instrumental results to protein concentration determined by biuret method was precise at low and moderate concentrations (5-100 mg/100 ml) that are important for screening urinalysis (Table 3) . Results for occult blood agreed in 89%. However, there were 20 negative instrumental results that were positive by the strips. when results of occult blood were compared to number of RBC in urine, 8 instrumental negative specimens revealed to have more than 10 BBC/mm3, indicating apparently instrumental false negative results. These may be due to ascorbic acid interference or incomplete wetting of the reagent area.
