Abstract

For measuring child's reactivity and spontaneity, the behavioral activity scale (BASC), which was consisted of 29 items, was constructed. 395 children (3yr. to 6yr.) in day nurseries and kindergarten were evaluated to examin reliability and validity of BASC. 28 items showed the high loading in the first component according to the principal component analysis, suggesting that each item of the scale estimates the identical subjects. The factor analysis using varimax method extracted 5 factors as follows : 1) self-expression and responsiveness to others, 2) concentration and positiveness to accomplish a purpose, 3) physical health signs, 4) playing widely and rhythmically, 5) emotion and sleep. There were significant correlations between the assesments by the different observers, although observer to observer differences were shown in mean scores. These results suggest that BASC'S observer measures a child relatively in a group. In the follow-up studies after 22 months, there were significant correlations in 14 items, but total score correlation (r=35) couldn't reach significant level. Clinical applications of BASC were discussed in view of child development and patterns of child life styles.
