Serum uric acid concentration (SUA) was measured after two different types of maximal exercise. Five healthy male subjects performed exhaustive exercise running on an inclined treadmill (TR) uphill and on a cycle ergometer (CE) with a pedal frequency of 60 rpm for equal durations. Higher oxygen uptakes and blood lactate concentration were obtained during maximal running compared to cycling. SUA exhibited a maximum level (TR, 8.4±0.3 and CE, 8.7±0.6 mg/dl) 1 hour after exercise, and maintained higher levels (TR, 6.8±0.3 and CE, 7.3±0.5 mg/dl) in comparison to basal level (TR, 5.3 ±0.5 and CE, 6.3±0.5 mg/dl) until 24 hours after exercise. There was no significant differences, however, for the SUA responses between the two types of exercise. Additionally, there were no significant differences among creatinine clearance, uric acid clearance or urinary uric acid excretion responses. These results suggest that the SUA after maximal exercise is unaffected by type of exercise.
