Abstract

A bubble plume often sways and the flow is unsteady and/or three-dimensional. In order to understand the flow pattern, three-dimensional numerical analyses were carried out. A vertical spiral flow pattern was found in our previous investigation. In this report, the vertical spiral flow is investigated in more details both experimentally and numerically. The flow pattern was visualized with aluminum particles. A cluster of aluminum particles in the flow was observed and the pattern formed by the particles corresponded to a vertical spiral vortex. The vortex moved towards the center of the column and was taken into the upward flow caused by the bubble plume. This could be verified both experimentally and by calculations. Alternately the vertical spiral flow was generated and disappeared.
