Pyongyang Normal School: An example of teacher education in colonial Korea

Abstract

Study of the education and school history, school staff, students in the school and the students' life style of the Pyongyang normal school was the aim of this study. In the history of staff members who served the Pyongyang normal school were, 3 principals and 80 teachers served the school more than 4 years who were taken in 1929 mainly from public normal schools, instructors having teaching experience in public normal schools in 1930s, and from business schools in 1940s those having teaching experience. Ninety percent of the students who belonged to the department of common education up to 1941 were the Korean people and later, the majority was of the Japanese who came in large amount to join the school of military services and adjournment system as volunteer. To provide the expenses of the teachers, extended elementary school education plan was made and from 1942, government supported all the members with reduction in student fees but there was no improvement in the staff lacking aspect and then Japanese teachers were invited to meet the staff lacking. Geographically, the students in Pyongyang normal school were mostly from Pyongannambug area and were supported by their families having agriculture. School teachers in the Korean monarchical period were mainly from the ruling class and after 1894 the teaching professionals were from the productive class and in the colonial period these were the children from farmer layer. The graduates from the Pyongyang normal school were not only educated to become instructors or teachers but also to engage in civil and public services, administration and manufacturing.
