Description

People normally establish their daily habits or routine in their late adolescence. A number of studies have been conducted on the relationship between these daily habits and physical and mental health for this period. We reviewed 25 original papers and reports of studies on daily habits and the health status of students published from 1988 to March 1999.1. Collegians were the subjects in most of the daily habits and health status literature, and many chose female students. Among those factors affecting daily habits, 28.0% of the literature examined living environment factors as well as psychological factors. Physical health status was assessed by such items as subjective symptoms, health check-up results, body fat percentage, bone density and the number of nonattendance days. In many studies, mental health status was reported based on questionnaire surveys. 2. Many studies reported daily habits and health status are highly correlated, and that sleep, exercise, diet and optimum weight affect health status. Few students had fallen into the habit of smoking or dinking alcohol. But none reported the relationship of such habits with health status. The literature indicated a close relationship between daily habits and health status. For the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases, it is necessary of provide self-care education in late adolescene to help people establish good habits for health in this period and protect their own health.
