In spite of rapid and frequent eye movements, called saccades, human vision appears stable in daily life. Numerous psychophysical studies have reported tha saccades are also known to alter visual perception traniently : they reduce sensitivity to visual atimuli (saccadic suppression) and disort the spatial position of briefly presented stimuli (saccadic image-displacement). In this article, I review recent psychophysical studies that examined these saccade produced visual phenomena, and discuss how these phenomena are related to neural mechanisms underlying perceptual stability. Both extraretinal signals and visual stimuli are likely to play important roles in maintaining visual stability.
