Abstract

Since the Brundtland Commission in 1987, the concept of sustainable development is one of the key issues in various fields including city planning. In addition, there are a lot of different definitions of the concept of sustainable  development and evaluation methods for sustainability adapted by the cities all over the world. This study aims to make arrangement of the definitions of the concept of sustain able development and to categorize the existing evaluation methods for sustainability of a city-, region- and national-scale by reviewing the relevant documents and web sites. As results, we figure out the three preliminary principles and four components which consist of the concept and the typology of evaluation methods.
