Description
We investigated the influence of the Great East Japan Earthquake on clients, who were suffering from psychosomatic complaints. The continuity of clients' social life had been disrupted because of their illness. Stress coping multiple model, known as BASIC-Ph was used as an evaluation tool in this research. In Study 1, we individually interviewed clients about their experience during the 12-months following the disaster caused by the earthquake. Results identified the content of clients' fears that influenced their functional continuity. We also identified five categories in the world recognition and self-esteem of 24 clients following the disaster. In Study 2, we followed up three clients that had an affirmative self-esteem after the disaster. Results indicated that as a result of the disaster experience, these three clients had changed their activities, their world recognition, and their self-esteem. Furthermore, they had developed new activities and had restored their connections to society, which had been discontinued. It is concluded that the adaptive action of these clients that had resulted from posttraumatic growth continued until three years after the disaster.
