Description

The purpose of this paper is to show the roles of visual stylistic elements. Previous stylistic research has dealt mainly with “what is written (content).” However, as Östman (2005) points out, “How the text is arranged (design)” greatly influences the understanding of the text. The choice of visual stylistic element is closely tied to the genre and the features of the writer of the texts. Emojis are relatively new visual stylistic element, and it is said that the choice of pictograms will express the personality of the writer (Evans 2017). Nevertheless, few studies have focused on them. This paper compares the style of a famous Twitter user, “@tokyoxxxclub, ” with the style of its parody, and discusses the role of visual stylistic elements in their production and the comprehension of parody. The analysis shows that the arrangement of the text and the use of emojis have a greater influence than do the contents of the text. In addition, the producers of the stylistic parody recognize and imitate the regular patterns of emojis observed in tweets of “@tokyoxxxclub.” In general, if such regularity of parodies is violated, the acceptability of parody declines. This paper indicates that, the analysis of visual stylistic elements is indispensable in future stylistic research.
