Abstract

The knowledge of glasses was diffused to the Eastern Asia from the West during the Warring-States Period, and then to Japan. Archaeological evideences of the antique glasses in Japan have been reported since 1920. The findings of curved glass beads "magatama" 勾玉 are noticeable, They had been made in Japan and were unearthed in the Province of Chikuzen 筑前 of Kyûshû occasionally together with imported Chinese glass disc "pi" 璧. Recently, curved glass beads "magatama" cylindrical glass beads "kudatama" 管玉, a mould for glass "magatama", and a glass piece of "se-gan" 塞杆, one of the burial ritual objects in the ancient China, were found in the vicinity of Sugu 須玖 in Chikuzen. These discoveries indicate the situation of glass industry in ancient Japan. In this article, the author re-examines these previous findings of glasses, points out the imported glass relics and home-made pieces, and discusses their archaeologicl sites. He also mentions about an uncommon small glass mirror kept by the late Kôzô Moriya 守屋孝蔵 in Kyoto, and proves that it was made in the Western Japan.
