Description

Gôshi 郷士 system has been understood as a conciliatory measure for the former Dogô 土豪 and resident subjects, and as a secondary organization in the clan government. This article pays attention to the role of the Gôshi system in the Tosa 土佐 clan in relation to the early clan government. The early government, under the subjective or objective conditions, had an important problem of measures against Hashirimono 走り者 who originated from burdonsome military service of the Shogunate fome Keichô 慶長 to Genna 元和 period; and from Kanei 寛永 to Kanbun 寛文 period in had a problem to overcome the inner contradiction of the clan system. The role, played by Gôshi consistently accentuated the intensification of local government, divided into three functional patterns of Shôya 庄屋 or country officials, local officials, and early clan merchants, in various aspects. The important role of Gôshi in the early Tosa clan government was due to the subjective cause of quantitative scarcity of feudal subjects and to the objective canse of low productive power owing to narrowness of cultivated land and width of forest.
