Abstract

This article is to establish the structure of the French fibre industry before the industrial revolution, as a preparative work for analyzing the development of the industrial revolution in the very industry; which means that the economic structure in the 'manufacturing period' should be examined from the viewpoint of the industrial revolution, not from the former viewpoint of the bourgeois revolution. Limiting our consideration to the cotton industry in eastern Normandy till 1880's we examine, using the possible original sources, what form this industry took in both the privileged city of Rouen and its agrarian surroundings, and what structure of market supported its production; we will make it clear this premise must be a condition for the establishment of factory system and offer a certain comment to the accepted view especially about the character and part of the urban merchants and most weavers of guild.
