Until the beginning of Taisho Period (1912-1926), modern technology represented by railways and the media made "abstract social space", and changed the people's way of looking, the mode of thinking. This change was the background to the development of early residential suburbs in Japan. During rapid economic growth (1955-1973), private-sector housing developers developed residential suburbs around big cities under many incentives provided by central and local governments. At this time also the technology represented by television and automobiles changed the people's way of looking, the mode of thinking. As a result many people preferred to live in the suburb. The case study of residential suburbs in Sendai is useful to understand the history of development of residential suburbs and the identification of problems easily
