When we listen to music in concerts, we receive both auditory and visual information. Not only music itself but also scenery of theaters affect the total impression of musical performance. In this study, the effect of color of stage lighting on the impression of music was examined by the simulation experiment. The visual stimuli were computer graphics of piano performance. They were projected on a screen by a liquid crystal projector. The auditory stimuli were the short musical passages produced by a MIDI synthesizer. The impression of music combined with various colored visual images was measured by the semantic differential method. Also, the degree of matching between color and music was judged. Systematic effects of the colors on the impression of music are shown. Red and purple images make the impression of music more powerful. In contrast, cyan makes the impression more powerless. Green, yellowish green, yellow, and cyan images make the impression of music brighter. Blue, violet, purple, and red make the impression darker. Violet and purple make the impression more emotional. The degree of matching between color and music changes as a function of colors and types of music. Blue, violet, purple, and red images are matched with powerful and dark music played with minor key and fast tempo. Bright music with major key and fast tempo match with green, yellowish green, yellow, and cyan. Music with slow tempo match with blue, purple, and violet. In general, music match with the colors which encourage the impression of music. The major experimental results are relevant to the color association.
