Description

In the Netherlands, religiously and ideologically different groups lived equally in the period of the "pillarization". The institutions of the pillarization had influenced the immigration policies until the 1980's, which were often regarded as the "tolerant" policies. However, as the society got aware of the fact that the immigrant communities were not integrated into the host society during the 1990's, some right-wing populists started to claim that the majority of immigrants were Muslims and they were the ones that causing the problems. This awareness has resulted in the Netherlands rejecting the EU accession of Turkey due to the fact that majority of the Turkish population is Muslims.
