Description

This paper focuses on the relationship between cranes and human society to falconry, using Ise falconry grounds in Kii Domain as a case study, and aims to clarify the protection of cranes brought about by falconry grounds management in the Edo period, its methods, and its impact on cranes. The analysis was based on the actual state of the cranes from a living creature's perspective. "Tsuna-Sashi" and "Tsuru-Kaitsuke-Yaku" were assigned in the Ise falconry grounds to tame and feed the cranes and thorough control of dogs and cats was carried out in the falconry grounds, as well as restrictions on firearms that included the surrounding areas. These efforts were appropriate in terms of the ecology and behavior of the cranes and can be evaluated as effective in protecting them and maintaining their migration and establishment. On the other hand, the protection of cranes during the Edo period may have caused them to become accustomed to people and may have contributed to conflicts with people due to them causing damage to crops and so on. In the context of the importance of cranes in the times of the samurai during the Edo period, including falconry, a unique relationship was established between cranes and human society back then.
