Abstract

The media, such as newspapers, TV news etc., aim at contextualizing daily happenings, through presenting them in schematized forms, in which various rhetorical devices are used. This paper analyzes the method of usage of rhetorical devices adopted in articles of Prothom Alo, one of the most popular newspapers of Bangladesh, written in Bengali language. The vocabulary of Bengali language contains a great number of Sanskrit loanwords, in spite of the fact the majority of Bangladeshi population are Muslim. The result of the analysis suggests that this linguistic discrepancy might possibly influence Bengali speaking readers’ modality of perception, which could eventually cause nuanced shifts in their comprehension of Islam.
