Abstract

Current research reveals that urban marketplaces function as specifically contextualized spaces that encourage linguistic creativity. Among the number of discourses performed in the Korean marketplace, the author focused on Vendor-Call, where sellers repeatedly cry out simple bits of information about the goods and prices in a loud voice. In Vendor-Call, the sellers use limited communicative resources, including both lexicon and syntactic structure. First, the author offers a definition of Vendor-Shouting discourse based on the ethnographic description of naturally occurring Vendor-Call in Korea using the SPEAKING model proposed by Hymes (1972). Next, the author considers the viability of Vendor-Call as a verbal art (Bauman 1977) by analyzing the way in which linguistic parallelism appears through the repetition of a specific phoneme, syntactic structure, specific meaning, and prosody. Consequently, the author elucidated the poetic verse structure of Vendor-Call with its specific rhyme, musical elements, and prosody patterns, repetition of like phonemes, variation in vocabulary and grammatical structure, and other linguistic devices, which are characterized by elements of linguistic play. Finally, the rhythmic structure created through repetition, linguistic parallelism, and musical effects strengthened through the co-occurrence of a nonverbal performance, such as rhythmical clapping and verbal performances accompanied by the tapping of feet, transforms Vendor-Call in the Korean marketplace into a verbal art.
