Abstract

Originating from Wuhan, China; the COVID-19 pandemic has been spreading throughout the world. Japan along with other countries has been experiencing economic and societal disruptions under the impact of outbreaks. Being one of the top destinations for international students including many from China, a lot of international students have opted to stay in Japan and continue their studies while the number of COVID-19 cases are still growing. Therefore, Japanese government and universities continue to regulate measures in response to the situation. In the rapidly changing current environment governed by high level of uncertainty, this study investigates the extent to which Chinese students residing in Japan have the knowledge of COVID-19 and their practice of countermeasures against the infection. To identify the factors which influence international students knowledge and implementation of countermeasures, the results of an online questionnaire survey of 162 Chinese international students in Japan from June 2020 to September 2020 were collected and analysed. Among the survey, 54.3% were women and 45.7% were men.83.3% of the respondents fall within the age bracket of 20-30 years old. From the results, it can be deduced that international students from China with different attributes have varying degree of knowledge with regards to COVID-19 in general and the safety measures to be taken against the virus. Moreover, the strategies implemented by Japanese government and Osaka University from September onwards have also being analysed and compared.Lastly, this research proposes several strategic routes that can be utilised to improve the international students’ capability of responding to the pandemic.
