Abstract

Job 42:7 is understood to be Yahweh's decision concerning the dispute between Job and his three friends. In this passage Yahweh praises Job, not his friends. Those who defended Yahweh in the dispute were the friends, but they were blamed later by Yahweh. Job, on the contrary, even tried to argue against Yahweh. Why, then, did Yahweh praise him? Usual opinions so far do not appear to be able to explain sufficiently this issue in the Book of Job. In this article the present writer tries to offer a new understanding for this issue through a careful comparison of BHS text and various terms in biblical translations. The writer observes some important characteristics of two key words, אֵלַי and נְכוֹנָה. He concludes that the passage in question suggests a desirable dynamic personal relationship between Yahweh and human beings.
