Description

The history of Hebrew presents us with a multilayered language, its last stage being Modern Hebrew, as it is spoken mainly in the State of Israel today. This paper surveys the different layers upon which Modern Hebrew has been built, focusing on certain trends and meaningful developments. The current form of the Hebrew language is broadly described, while explaining how it differs from its roots in Biblical Hebrew. Hebrew has been a sacred language for the Jews for many centuries, and it has given them their religious identity. Through its revival in the 19th and 20th centuries, Modern Hebrew has transformed itself to non-religious usage. This change is entwined with the creation of the modern Jewish identity, which has led to what some term "Israeli Hebrew," and this is discussed in the following paper.
