This paper aims at clarifying the business and financial conditions of the Japanese sole proprietor businesses and their development since 2000 by using the data collected in CRD. We find that the business performance of the sole proprietors in Japan consistently deteriorated since 2000 and that the downward trend is observed in the business size of the sole proprietors in Japan.
