Description

Using WasedaCASI&PAPI2009 data set, a public opinion survey of national representative sample of the Japanese voters, I tested a voting model for the 2009 General Election. The factors that contributed to the Democratic Party of Japan's victory included: voters' psychological support towards DPJ and their positive assessment of DPJ's ability to assume the government. The analysis of DPJ's mobilization efforts, on the other hand, revealed some weakness of DPJ's supporter organizations. Evaluation of Liberal Democratic Party's performance on policy issues did not play much of a role in the election, which suggested that the election was not an "issue-based" contest.
