This essay reviews Japanese colonial studies from an international perspective. The essay, however, is not intended as yet another example of so-called 'comparative empire studies'. Rather than comparing the Japanese empire with others, it focuses on the past and present of the historiography of Japanese colonialism. It discusses a range of theoretical issues by examining how the historiographical frameworks developed in the Euro-American academia was received, discussed, and critiqued by scholars of Japanese colonialism.
