Abstract

This study aims to reveal how discourse was created in weekly magazine reports on the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant Disaster. Analytical methods based in the field of pragmatics, including Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), were used to study articles published in March 2011 in three of Japan's biggest weekly magazines: Shukan Bunshun, Shukan Shincho, and Shukan Gendai. By examining how these magazines viewed other forms of media and made their reports, this study explains how weekly magazines attempt to create new "realities" about the nuclear disaster, the methods they employ in trying to influence readers, how they view other forms of media, and what type of medium these weekly magazines are trying to present themselves as in the first place.
