Description

This paper analyses the factors that led an popular disorder called Beer Riot in Munich 1844 to the Beer Boycott in two years. This shift of movements is uniquely early for it's been said to occur 1870's along the industrialization accelerating under the initiative of bourgeoisie and also seemingly exceptional for carried out exclusively by journeymen. The background of the case is reconsidered from two different aspects, of the potential continuity with traditional craftsmen-strikes and food riots in the early modern era and of discourses on beer as not only food but also a medium of sociability.
