説明
This paper discusses the characteristics and the possibilities of “International Japanese Studies.” Instead of placing International Japanese Studies as a trend domestically in Japan, the paper suggests to link it to the “Global Area Studies,” a paradigm emerging worldwide today. The paper asked, what are the characteristics of International Japanese Studies? What would be the approach to progress this field further? The paper takes a relational approach and analyzes how International Japanese Studies developed its relationship with globalization, area studies, and Japanese studies outside of Japan since the 1970s. The paper then argues that the International Japanese Studies in the second wave has attempted to transcend Japan’s hitherto image and understanding and transform nationalistic sentiments bestowed among Japanese scholars in Japan. Such ideas were developed as a response to the “global turn” in the area studies. While these basic premises of International Japanese Studies continue until today, the current “crisis” of the Japanese studies urges International Japanese Studies to “transcend Japan” even more radically. The paper proposed two approaches from recent developments in social science and humanities – transnationalism and theorizing – that would further enable Japanese studies to become more “interesting” and contribute to a broader and global academic field.
