Abstract

The purpose of this essay is to empirically examine the production and release process of the film about the pre-war proletarian politician Yamamoto Senji, who was killed in a terrorist attack in 1929. Yamamoto and his shocking death have been the subject of films since before World War II, but it was not until after the war that Yamamoto Satsuo made the film "Unarmed Struggle" in 1960. This essay describes the production and screening of "Unarmed Struggle" using the Yamamoto Akira Collection and materials from the General Council of Trade Unions of Japan Osaka Regional Council to illustrate the role of the independent film production and four wall distribution projects in post-war Japan. I also discussed how the production and release of "Unarmed Struggle" was related to the cultural and social movements in Japan around 1960. Itis impossible to understand the process of planning, production, and release of the film without relating it to the political and social situation in post-war Japan, as the security struggle was very active in Japan in 1960, when it was screened. This paper examines the independent film production and four wall distribution project of "Unarmed Struggle" from the perspectives of two regions, Kyoto and Osaka, and two organizations, film circle and labor unions, to comprehensively consider the impact the movement had on Japanese society around 1960.
