Abstract

This paper analyzes materials belonging to the Yamamoto Akira Collection to demonstrates how the All Kobe Film Circle Council (Zen kōbe eiga sākuru kyōgikai), which was established in 1950, was affected by the regional characteristics of cinemas. Chapter one reviews existing research and discusses the regionality of the Film Circle Council. Chapter two demonstrates how the All Kobe Film Circle Council attempted to enhance the quality of film criticism during the latter part of the 1950s, during which the film circle movement had stagnated. Chapter three summarizes the multiple magazines published by the All Kobe Film Circle Council that are held by the Yamamoto Akira Collection. This chapter explores the publishing activities of the council. In Chapter four, I show that the cinemas that cooperated with the All Kobe Film Circle Council were not the newly emerging area of Sannomiya or the high-class cinemas of Motomachi, but rather cinemas located on the old cinema street of Shinkaichi, which was frequented by port workers. In Chapter five, I argue that the conflict between the All Kobe Film Circle Council and the All Kobe Entertainment Association over the suspension of admission discounts was linked to the decline of Shinkaichi and the rise of Sannomiya, which brought about a change in the urban landscape of Kobe.
