説明

For ancient people, dreams were very important as something closely associated with life, and believed to be the “prophecies” of a god or Buddha. It was not unusual for people to record the content of a dream, believed in a dream, and acted according to what they saw in a dream. In literature, the word “dream” was used frequently in the traditional Japanese poetry known as waka, monogatari, nikki, and various other styles of literary works, so that it serves as an important clue to understand those works. Among other things, the Sarashina Nikki?written in the late Heian period in the 11th century?is attracting attention, because it contains as many as 11 cases of dreams that the author actually saw, which are more than those found in other diaries written by women, in terms of the ratio to the total volume. Among those 11 cases, one is a dream about the previous life of the author Sugawara no Takasue no musume herself. In this dream, a Buddhist priest who seemed to be the head of Kiyomizu Temple told her that in her previous life she was a sculptor of Buddhist images for the temple. Many of the existing studies have pointed out that this “dream about the previous life” was a turning point in her attitude toward dreams, from her addiction to stories to her awakening to religious faith. Based on this recognition, some have contrasted her ideas about stories and about faith, and concluded that her attitude toward dreams that are deeply related to faith had changed from “not believing” a dream to “believing” a dream. This article reviews Takasue no musume’s attitude toward dreams and faith, and explores the meaning and function of “the dream about the previous life” in the diary as a whole, as well as the relationship between dreams and her religious faith, by rereading sentences before and after “the dream about the previous life” in the diary.
