説明

It is widely known that Heidegger has a unique view on the history of Western philosophy (henceforth: philosophy). The most characteristic feature of it is that he construes the overall tendency in the history of philosophy in terms of philosophers’ understandings of the concept of being, and ultimately concludes that they tend to forget the being. This tendency is called ‘forgetfulness of being’. The ‘forgetfulness of being’ is one of the key concepts and perhaps even one of the most wellknown of them in Heidegger’s thought. Nevertheless, the content of it is hardly straightforward. This is because we know that the being has been one of the central themes in the history of philsophy, and so philosophers seem to have never forgotten the being. Then, what is the ‘forgetfulness of being’ as Heidegger finds it almost everywhere in the history of philosophy? The aim of this paper is to give an answer to this puzzling question. In particular, I argue that the content of ‘forgetfulness of being’ can be clarified if we take into account Heidegger’s interpretation of Aristotle’s idea of the ‘being as truth’, and also show that this particular interpretation can refute the criticism by Herman Philipse.
