宮沢賢治一族と真宗大谷派の僧、近角常観との間には密接な関係があった。近角の布教の本拠地であった求道会館から発見された、宮沢一族からの二十通の書簡は、その具体的な関係をよく示している。その書状の中で、とくに賢治の妹トシ発の二通の書簡が注目に値する。真宗の信仰を獲ることができないという悩みを、彼女が告白しているからである。賢治が真宗の信者から法華経の行者になったとき、トシはいち早く賢治にしたがった。この書状の存在から、今後は、賢治からトシへの一方的感化があっただけではなく、トシの中に存在していた精神的空白に賢治が呼応したという面を考慮する必要性が認められる。

There was a close relationship between the family of MIYAZAWA Kenji and CHIKAZUMI Jokan, a priest of the Otani sect of Shin-Buddhism. Twenty letters from the Miyazawas were found in the Kyudo-Kaikan, Chikazumi's missionary center. Two letters from Toshi, a younger sister of Kenji, were especially important since she confessed she could not follow the doctrine of Shin-Buddhism. When Kenji became a follower of The Lotus Sutra after abandoning the doctrine of Shin-Buddhism, it was Toshi who immediately followed and supported him without hesitation. These letters reveal an aspect that Toshi's mental void affected Kenji to some extent rather than the supposition Kenji led Toshi in confirming her faith.confession
