ジョウゼフ・コンラッドの小説『ロード・ジム』(1900) は,自己保存の本能という「動物性」が人間を衝き動かし,背信行為を犯させる物語として解釈されることが多く,その背後にはダーウィニズムの影響を受けた「動物としての人間」という作者コンラッドの人間観があると指摘されてきた。しかしこの作品に登場する犬のイメージを分析すると,単に自己保存の本能に駆り立てられるだけではなく,それを超えるものを持つ存在としても描かれていることが分かる。つまりコンラッドの動物観は,単に自己保存の本能に動かされる存在というような一面的なものではなく,この点について『ロード・ジム』を読み直すことが肝要である。

This article focuses on the images of dogs that appear in Joseph Conrad's Lord Jim (1900). It has often been argued that Lord Jim deals with man's instinct for self-preservation: when Jim, the protagonist, abandons his seemingly-sinking ship and his passengers, he is driven by this instinct; in this way, this novel reveals to the readers that man is just an animal. This seems, however, too simplistic. By portraying dogs in several ways, Conrad problematizes the relationship between man and animals. For example, when a captain named Brierly commits suicide by jumping into the sea from his ship, he is afraid that his dog may go after him in spite of its instinct for self-preservation. In this way, it is shown that animals are not merely driven by their instinct for self-preservation, and that dogs are sometimes more faithful than man. Conrad's idea of animals is thus more complicated than it has been heretofore argued.
