Description

We developed a simple and cost-effective method for extracting carbon from dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in water samples using the conventional vacuum line for CO2 purification for radiocarbon analyses. The method, which is named ReCEIT, consists of repeated cycles of CO2 extraction from water into the headspace of the reaction container, introduce by expansion of the extracted gas into the vacuum line, and trapping of CO2 cryogenically, and does not require the use of a carrier gas. This report presents the experiment results for blank assessment using NaHCO3 solution. In order to obtain the blank value without the ReCEIT procedure, we performed the direct combustion of the NaHCO3 powder after pre-freezing and freeze-drying of NaHCO3 solution. Contrary to our expectation, the 14C concentration of the freeze-dried NaHCO3 sample was higher than that of CO2 extracted from the NaHCO3 solution sample by the ReCEIT procedure, indicating that the freezedried NaHCO3 powder is difficult to show the original 14C value due to the possibility of carbon contamination during pre-freezing and freeze-drying treatment. The decrease of CO2 yeild and the δ13C change of the freeze-dried NaHCO3 powder sample indicates that the NaHCO3 solution was likely evaporated partially and fractionated isotopically.
