Abstract

In order to understand more about the Carboniferous brachiopod faunas in Thai-Malay Peninsula, examination has been focussed on their correlation and their characteristics in paleobiogeography based on the recent knowledge of the brachiopod faunas and the species assemblages of closely related fusulines and conodonts. As far as the present knowledge is concerned, the Visean and Namurian faunas are distributed in the peninsula area and often characterized by limestone fades. The Bashkirian and Moscovian faunas, on the other hand, are widely distributed not only in the peninsula area, but also in northern Thailand and are mainly characterized by argillaceous fades. During the Visean and Early Namurian the brachiopod faunas in this province were closely related to the Eurasian faunas and also to the Australian ones. However, the Middle Carboniferous brachiopod faunas in the Thai-Malay province are clearly distinct from those of Australia. This faunal difference is apparently recognizable in Late Bashkirian or Early Moscovian time. The isolation of faunas between the Thai-Malay and the Australian provinces probably appeared in Late Namurian to Early Bashkirian time.
