Abstract

This study targeted research participants who were adults, examined the relationship between the knowledge (or the lack thereof) about periodontal disease, smoking, and periodontal-related systemic diseases (cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, and diabetes) and their dental health behavior. The objective of the study was to apply the findings to the dental health guidance for periodontal patients.

The participants were 153 adults (103 males and 50 females aged 20 to 59). The study was conducted through a web-based survey among those who gave their consent through an anonymous self-administered questionnaire. Digital data was then collected and statistically analyzed by the researchers.

The results indicated that people who knew about the effects of periodontal disease and smoking were significantly more likely to have regular dental checkups than those who did not know about it. Furthermore, people who knew about periodontal disease, smoking, and systemic diseases were significantly more likely to brush their teeth after lunch, as an extra precaution, than those who did not have such knowledge. In addition, people who had such knowledge were more likely to use supplementary cleaning devices (interdental brush and dental floss) than those who lacked the knowledge thereof.

It is clear that people with knowledge about periodontal disease, smoking, and systemic diseases have better dental health behavior. It is important that dental hygienists actively provide information on periodontal-related systemic diseases during every periodontal treatment. It is believed that providing more information to patients may help them quit smoking and contribute to the prevention or treatment of periodontal-related systemic diseases as an addition to helping them deal with periodontal disease.
