Description

Low labor productivity has a significant negative impact on the Japanese economy's overall productivity growth owing to the retail industry's large shares of workers and value added. In recent years, the importance of digital transformation (DX) has been advocated. Furthermore, improving productivity through DX has emerged as an urgent issue in the retail industry because of increasing competition from e-commerce companies and consumer demand for new-normal lifestyles. This study develops a theoretical model of structure surrounding DX of the Japanese retail industry. The structural differences in DX that differentiate successful retailers from their unsuccessful counterparts and the elements underlying the barriers to DX are analyzed using discussion-based data drawn from practitioners specializing in retailing and qualitative inductive research with M-GTA.
