Abstract

This study interviewed the supporters of a self-advocacy group, to investigate their own role recognition as well as the changes that these supporters underwent in the context of Japanese disability movements for people with intellectual disabilities. The semi-structured interview was carried out for four supporters who were active in X prefecture in November from May, 2017.

The role of these supporters comprised “information provision,” “real intentions,” “information dissemination support,” “creating opportunities for experience,” “creating opportunities for interaction,” “revealing the truth,” “learning and fighting together,” “connecting comrades,” “training new supporters,” “watching over an activity.” Their role recognition was obtained through trial and error. The support of supporters affects their sense of rights and willingness to participate in the disability movement among people with intellectual disabilities. The supporter is not merely a source of “one who offers support” for people with intellectual disabilities. Rather, their sense of values transforms during the process in which the supporter actively supports people with intellectual disabilities. In addition, the nature of their, support changes as well.
