The goal of this paper is to argue against the multiple-level approach and multiple-copy approach to binding relations. The multiple-level approach postulates that the Binding Theory applies at all points of the derivation: not a particular level, but over all stages of the derivation. The multiple-copy approach, on the other hand, postulates that the Binding Theory applies to more than one copy created by syntactic movement: not a particular copy position, but over all copy positions. Based on several empirical arguments from reconstruction effects, this paper argues that the Binding Theory applies to a particular copy position (i.e. a reconstruction site) at a particular level (i.e. LF). We will thereby provide support to Chomsky's (1995, 2000) hypothesis that the Binding Theory is an interpretive rule.
