Description
In Japan, the modern drama, which is an important element of the contemporary art, begins with the foundation of the Tsukiji Little Theater in the year 1924. This era, the second half of the 1920s, also coincides with the end of the so-called “Taisyo Democracy”. The task of this study is to analyze the effects of the Tsukiji Little Theater and the diverse historical situations revolving around it. This task will inevitably lead us to consider the basic character of the “modern” in Japan. This paper, the introductory part of the whole study, limits the range of discussion to the fundamental problems only.
